Former British Sugar Factory, Kings Lynn
Remediation & Enabling
CLIENT: Palm Paper Limited
CONTRACT: £1.7m contract to undertake site clearance, asbestos removal, demolition, remediation and enabling works on a 64 Hectare former British Sugar site to facilitate construction of a £300m Paper Mill; the largest in Europe.
The site presented a considerable challenge due to the phased nature of works, complex structures requiring demolition, substantial below ground obstructions, overlap with outgoing site tenants and ongoing large scale construction works. Due to the construction programme constraints, Tamdown were required to complete a substantial proportion of the works on a fast-track basis to enable phased handover and commencement of large-scale construction works. Substantial below obstructions were encountered at the site, the targeted removal of which utilised non-intrusive geophysical survey methods.
Working in close collaboration with the clients nominated consultants (RSK Geoconsult), Tamdown Regeneration implemented an integrated solution including:
- Clearance of vegetation and bulk stripping of 70,000m3 topsoil from the open space area of the site, in close co-ordination with the ecological consultants undertaking clearance works
- Controlled removal of notifiable and non-notifiable asbestos containing materials
- Controlled demolition of above ground structures up to 25m high, removal of substantial quantities of recovered steel for recycling
- Slab and foundations breakout & removal
- Processing & crushing over 50,000 tonnes of recovered hardcore
- Off-site removal of 2,500 tonnes of asbestos contaminated materials Targeted source removal and ex-situ bioremediation of 2,500m3 of hydrocarbon contaminated soils
- Pre-treatment and off-site disposal of 1,000m3 heavy metal contaminated soils
- Construction of 2.5km of service trenches with multiple service ducts
