Basement, Sutherland Road, Walthamstow

Concrete Frames & Structures

CLIENT: Telford Homes

CONTRACT VALUE: £3,500,000

CONTRACT DURATION: 35 Weeks

This contract was primarily the construction of an RC Basement and undercroft carparking totalling 5500m2 together with the ground beams and ground floor slabs to an additional 9 units.

The RC Works consisted of a brush finished basement slab laid to falls with RC retaining walls and columns up to and including ground floor.

Before this could commence however, significant remediation works had to be carried out to soils and groundwaters to render the site fit for end use, and to facilitate basement construction. A number of hydrocarbon hotspots originating from underground storage tanks were identified during the original SI and further delineation works by Tamdown. The tanks were decommissioned and removed under appropriate duty of care conditions, and soils were treated via vented biopiles on a specially constructed bioremediation platform, enabling the soils to be down graded in classification prior to disposal. There was also a high volume of buried concrete structures that were removed and crushed down for re-use in the piling mats.

The remediation works were completed on programme which allowed the construction works to start on time and ultimately hit the final programme end date.
